The Fred Whitton Challenge

Julian Bradury a Rolton Group 'Iron Man' raised £1000 in sponsership for the MacMillan Cancer Relief Nurses. A significant amount of which was from Rolton Group and its employees to complete the Fred Whitton Challenge over 100 miles of bike riding in the Lake District.

'With regard to the event, it was a beautiful day in the Lakes – hot, sunny and no wind (having been brought up in the Lake District I can tell you how rare that is!), myself and riding partner for the day, Andy Wildman, set off with another 850 or so enthusiastic cyclists at some stupidly early time in the morning. All was going very well, Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter Passes all went by without too much fuss, a couple of feed stations (particularly nice flapjack) and then the big one – Hardnott Pass, 1.5 miles of up to 33% gradient and coming just after the 100 mile distance – that hurt, a lot! Wrynose Pass which comes just after it at only 25% felt like a bit of a breeze other than the thunder and lightning that met us on the summit.
