What To Expect
Sanjay
The Structural Engineer
Twenty-six year old Sanjay joined Rolton Group after finishing his degree in Civil Engineering at Loughborough University in 2001.

He had previously spent his sandwich year working with us, assisting engineers and gaining valuable experience. A minimum placement of ten months eventually turned into 15 months and after graduating he came and joined us on a permanent basis.

"My first taste of the how engineers work in the real world went well here, and so I came back," he explains. Despite gaining a degree in Civil Engineering, Sanjay also wanted to be a Structural Engineer and has worked hard at Rolton to gain as much experience as possible.

"In the beginning, there's a lot to learn and take in straight away. You assist engineers and try to be as helpful as possible," he says. "By the time you get here, you may know how to do it in theory, but you've never really done it in practice."

Much of his early work at the Group was in Computer Aided Design (CAD), which he had been introduced to at university. His first three years were spent at the Group's Peterborough office where he gained valuable experience in structural engineering, particularly in steelwork and working with clients in the automotive industry.

To fill out some of the gaps in his experience, Sanjay moved to our Higham Ferrers office in Northamptonshire, in July 2004.

It's our policy and practice to give staff more experience of different departments and since his move he has worked on foundations and with the Group's Geotechnical team. The Group maintains a skills, knowledge and capability record for all employees, which helps everyone keep their skills and experience up to date.

Sanjay is currently mapping out his professional progress and working towards qualification as a Chartered Engineer.
