Senior engineer Chris's previous site investigation entailed 17 machine-excavated trial pits dug to depths of up to 3.8m right across the proposed development and some further contamination testing. From the results of this test, he can build up an accurate picture of the geological and hydrological characteristics of the site.
In layman's terms, his report gives the site a clean bill of health. However, mature trees on the site can extract large amounts of water from the ground. Any clay in the ground will shrink if it loses a lot of water. For that reason, the team need to understand the exact location and extent of any clay deposits.
