Having found a gap in the market for a civil and structural engineering consultancy David set-up Rolton Consulting Engineers from his mother-in-law’s spare bedroom in Irchester. Just a year later, the first ‘real’ office was purchased in Broad Green, and the client base steadily grew.
Following his footsteps, working in the evenings for local contractors Peter bought his first PC, setting up Rolton Services Consultants (mechanical and electrical building services engineering consultancy). He was approached to undertake a services design job for RS Components in Corby, a 26 million expansion project, the first working for himself.
Towards the end of the decade as the business expanded, both businesses moved to the Charles Parker Building in Higham Ferrers, which is still our head office today.
Rolton Group was one of the first to use the term ‘partnering’ before it became fashionable. Encompassing the quality of its people, the innovation of its solutions, whereby clients understand the value that engineers bring to their projects.
Striving to do their best, continually improving through education and partnership is echoed in the organisation today – with the first client Wilcon Homes still a firm customer of Rolton today.
The 1990s brought with them new challenges, as the government ‘turned off the construction valve’ and the flow of new construction contracts slowed. However, Rolton successfully navigated this difficult period and went on in this decade to work with Rover.
This led to involvement with and the completion of an award-winning project for Rover, as well as Rolton becoming a Tier 1 supplier for the Ford Motor Company.
Rolton won a contract for Shells’ Oil Storage Buoy – An environmental solution to the disposal of Brent Spa.
This decade also saw the opening of offices in Coleshill and Peterborough – a new place for Rolton Services Consultants expanding team.
Rolton Management Services, which was led by Allan Rose to initially support work in the automotive sector, was also established and the three companies came together to form Rolton Group.
In the early 2000s Climate Change was at the forefront, Rolton set-up Cool Planet Technologies a contracting business, that was acquired by British Gas.
Rolton were appointed as temporary works designers for Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport, with responsibility for the Terminal’s roof lifts and the erection of the new control tower.
Peter Rolton became a government advisor as part of the Renewables Advisory Board (RAB).
Responsibly investing in the principles that prioritise Environmental, Social and Governance forms one of the key values of our holistic view, that sustainability extends beyond environmental issues.
Rolton provided advice for The Crown Estate, the Ministry of Defence and Jaguar Land Rover on their corporate energy strategies.
Rolton Group has shaped the environments that provide a working framework for thousands of people across the UK. The work we did for Aston Martin and for the Rover Group are examples of the way that creativity and engineering know-how can create world-class working environments.
During our fourth decade we purchased our new Birmingham office. David Rolton decided to retire permanently, and a new board of directors was agreed.
Appointment as Employer’s Agent, Project Manager and Clerk of Works in the delivery of Haribo’s new sweet making plant in Castleford, Yorkshire.
This decade also saw a joint venture between Rolton Group and Kilbride Infrastructures to form new sister company, Rolton Kilbride.
Due to the business expanding even further, our Peterborough offices moved to new, larger facilities. We also worked with a high profile footballer to help design a new low carbon home.
We continue to support professionals at all stages of their careers and in 2017, Rolton Group employed more graduates than ever before.
Craig Smith stepped up into the position of Managing Director. Rolton Group became Rolton to reflect new stage and progression of the business, with a new Executive Board of Directors appointed.
Rolton were instrumental in working with Salamanca Group to secure the £10bn investment to build an AI data centre campus in Blyth. Rolton work closely to identify opportunities in scale, environment site identification, power supply, evaluation, and planning alongside architecture, project management, technical engineering, and design solutions.
