Hayway Former Infant School, Rushden – Extensions and Alterations

The Hayway Infant School in Rushden opened more than 100 years ago to meet the growing need for places in the local area.

Over a century later, the historic building is now being modernised and refurbished to become a special educational needs (SEN) school, providing additional capacity for the nearby Rowan Gate School; Rolton Group is providing mechanical and electrical building service engineering on the project.

To respect the nature of the SEN school, enhanced access control systems and door entry will be provided throughout the site to protect pupils from leaving the building unsupervised. In addition to the enhanced access control to the school, a nurse call system will be installed in each classroom along with an internal telephone system. Rolton Group has undertaken dynamic thermal modelling of the building, alongside extensive surveys of the existing installed mechanical and electrical building services to assess their suitability for continued use upon the school’s reopening.

The project was returned from tender in early 2014, but unfortunately the costs were over the allocated budget. To combat this, Rolton Group undertook a collaborative value engineering exercise with the project team and the contractor to ensure that this scheme was able to progress within the cost plan allowances.

We are pleased to report that the project has now started on site and is due for completion by the end of the year.
