Rolton were delighted to attend the official opening of the new £9.4m County Mortuary at Riverside Business Park, a project that marks a transformative milestone for bereavement services and public infrastructure in Northamptonshire.

Working in close partnership with West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) and Stepnell Ltd, Rolton delivered comprehensive multi-disciplinary engineering services for this vital facility.

“We are immensely proud to have played a key role in delivering this vital facility for the people of Northamptonshire,” said Peter Rolton, Executive Chairman. “Projects of this nature require a unique balance of technical precision and deep sensitivity. By integrating our multi-disciplinary expertise, from complex geotechnical assessments to high-specification building services we have helped create a modern, resilient environment that prioritises dignity for families and provides the highest standards of support for the professionals serving them.”

The project represents a significant investment by the Council, replacing ageing infrastructure with a modern, dignified environment designed to support families during their most difficult times.

Technical excellence meets compassionate design

The design was developed in conjunction with industry experts, including a national pool of pathologists, local fire and police authorities, undertakers, mortuary equipment and CT scanner specialists alongside WNC internal stakeholders.

The state-of-the-art centre centralises regional post-mortem services, significantly reducing delays and travel requirements. While the facility is a triumph of technical engineering, it prioritises the human element of care, featuring private, respectful viewing and identification rooms to offer a peaceful space for visiting families.

Key features of the new facility include:

  • Centralised Services: Streamlined post-mortem process
  • Compassionate Design: Dedicated private suites for family viewing and identification
  • Operational Efficiency: Enhanced logistics for funeral directors and healthcare professionals
  • Future Readiness: Advanced capacity ensuring the region is better prepared for major incidents

Supporting the Community

The opening of the Northampton Public Mortuary ensures the local community benefits from one of the most advanced forensic and bereavement facilities in the country. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to public sector excellence and the delivery of infrastructure that makes a tangible difference to society.
