This year, Rolton Group joined local companies Briggs & Forrester and Argus Fire to sponsor The Westwood Academy’s Coventry basketball league.
The sponsorship money has been used to furnish each of the 10 teams from different local schools taking part in the league with their very own team bibs, adding a new level of professionalism to the much-loved basketball tournament.
The Westwood Academy is a small school with a group of children from very diverse backgrounds, always seeking to support all pupils to see them exceed their expected outcomes. The academy have found sport to be a fantastic support for the teaching and learning processes, showing students first-hand the value of teamwork. As such, the city-wide basketball league was born in 2015 encouraging all local secondary schools to get involved.
Matt Colebrook, Associate Director for Rolton Group, said: “When Westwood Academy Chair of Governors Paul Harris told us about the sponsorship he was trying to raise for the basketball league, we were more than happy to help. Such a simple change like introducing brand new team bibs can transform the way everyone feels, lifting team spirit and helping to bring a fresh, refocused attitude to the game.”
The nail-biting final match of the season was held at The Westwood Academy in March and pitted the home team against the Barrs Hill School team. There was a great turnout for the final, which saw support and encouragement being shouted from the side-lines by students, staff, sponsor representatives and Head Teacher, Ms Jane Benton.
Jenny Baker, Business Development Executive for Rolton Group, said: “The atmosphere was brilliant and everyone played very well. The final score was Barrs Hill 35:23 Westwood Academy and we were all really impressed with the skills shown by all players – it was great to watch! Congratulations again to the Barrs Hill School team; a well fought match and deserved win. We wish all of the teams taking part in the tournament next year the very best of luck.”
