Last year saw the 50th Anniversary of the University of Northumbria’s Building Services Engineering course, in which Rolton Group offered a prize of £1,500 to the student who submitted the best built environment renewable / low carbon integration project as part of the University’s Level 6 and 7 Degree Show, which featured over 55 current students’ design project work from both BEng (Hons) and Master’s level projects. Due to the success of last year, the prize has become an annual occurrence.

Craig Smith, Director of Rolton Group judged the awards and came to the conclusion that this year’s winner was David Creed with The Cricket; a new banking headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Craig was particularly impressed by David’s idea for the building ventilation to mimic the breathing function similar to that of a cricket, hence the name of the project and that the building would have a filtering system to redirect pollutants and contaminants. David’s work also considered utilising Lake Geneva as a source for his heating and cooling functions of the building via hydrothermal energy.

On Wednesday 13th July, Managing Director Allan Rose attended the award ceremony, where David was presented with his certificate and prize (pictured above). Senior Lecturer, Jess Tindall said of the occasion:

“We would like to very much thank Peter, and all the staff at Rolton Group, for their generous support for our Programme. Rolton Group’s sponsorship is invaluable for marketing at open days, careers events and for motivating students to strive to achieve their full potential. We are delighted that David’s imaginative ideas, critical thinking and hard work has been recognised externally and I know that he is very proud to have been selected as this year’s winner”.
