Hoddesdon

Rolton was appointed to provide multi-disciplinary engineering services for the development of the UK’s largest waste to energy gasification plant in Hertfordshire.

Appointed by Bouygues E&S Contracting UK Ltd to provide multi-disciplinary engineering services on the development of an advanced thermal treatment facility, with an initial output capacity of 10MWe and feedstock of refuse derived fuel (RDF).

Every constraint was considered at each RIBA stage of the project, including the newts, which had made their home in the semi-natural habitats of the brownfield site. We used 3D design and liaised with all stakeholders within the wider project team to create intelligent, integrated solutions for every part of the single-storey ATT facility and three storey office and welfare building.

In particular, we worked on the design layout and levels of private storm and foul drainage, as well as the design, specification and detailing of piled foundations and piled slabs. Our MEP engineers designed the heating and cooling systems, internal and external lighting, access control and CCTV.

  • Hoddesdon is the largest waste-to-energy plant in the UK
  • The plant generates 10MWe of power
  • Structural engineering and mechanical and electrical building services (MEP)
  • Complex site included highwater table, asbestos, six-meter culvert, nearby power station and endangered wildlife.
