Who we are

Britishvolt, Phoenix

Rolton Group has been appointed by Britishvolt to provide multi-disciplinary engineering design services and technical expertise for the production of the UK’s first-ever Gigaplant.

Britishvolt has acquired exclusive rights to a new site in Northumberland, formerly the site of the Blyth coal store/Power Station, which has been strategically selected by Britishvolt for its access to clean, renewable energy and excellent transport links.

The planning application was submitted in March 2021 with Rolton Group acting as Geotechnical/Geoenvironmental, Civil, Structural, Energy and MEP consultants in support of the application. Plans for the Gigaplant were granted unanimous approval in July 2021, with enabling works on-site commencing in September 2021.

Orral Nadjari, CEO/Founder of Britishvolt said:

“Rolton Group have been excellent throughout, conscientious and to schedule, as well as on point with exceptional communications.

It is often missed the sheer magnitude of hard work that goes into an SI/GI project, especially one of Britishvolt’s scale and timetable. It is the thoroughness of this sort of activity that sets the scene for a successful planning process and I value the work that you have completed.

So, on behalf of Britishvolt we wholeheartedly thank-you, and all of your teams/colleagues, for the great work you have done for us to date.”

The Gigaplant is planned to cover 95-hectares and will produce world-leading lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EV’s). It will be fundamental in the drive to achieving a Net-Zero economy by 2050 and is also imperative for the UK’s automotive industry to maintain a competitive advantage as we transition to a zero-carbon future. The site will use off-shore renewable energy and has the potential to use hydro-electric power generated in Norway. This will be transmitted 447 miles under the North Sea through the world’s longest inter-connector from the North Sea Link Project.

The new plant is the result of one of the largest industrial investments in British history and the single largest in the North-East of England since Nissan’s arrival in 1984. The project estimates to generate around 3,000 direct highly skilled jobs and potentially a further 5,000 in the wider supply chain. The factory, at full capacity, will produce enough cells for roughly 300,000 lithium-ion battery packs for the UK automotive industry.

Britishvolt, Ridge and Partners LLP, Rolton Group, alongside various other partners. are working on the design of this exciting facility. The Gigaplant is designed to deliver lithium-ion batteries in an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art facility. These collaborations will be intrinsic in targeting a low carbon manufacturing facility for Britishvolt.
