Dave Thompson - Project Engineer

What attracted you to a career in engineering, and to your specific discipline?

I enjoyed science and maths at school and felt engineering matched my skills and interests while maintaining a practical aspect. I studied Mechanical Engineering with Nuclear Technology at university and my interest in the energy industry grew.

What made you choose Rolton Group?

The variety of sectors that the company are involved in and the renowned clients attracted me to Rolton Group. The size of the company means that graduates are given responsibility for important projects immediately and can contribute to business in a meaningful way.

What was your interview and selection process with Rolton Group like?

I applied for the role through a recruitment agency who interviewed me on the telephone and at an assessment centre, prior to coming to Rolton Group for an interview. I initially applied for a role in the MEP department but after my first interview it was suggested that I might be more suited to the Energy team, which gave me the impression that they carefully consider their potential employees. This was reflected in the interview process as there was significant focus on if the role was right for me and reflected my interests and experience.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Working on projects that require me to learn and broaden my knowledge. This can include using new computer programmes, developing skills in report writing and presenting information and finding solutions to complex problems.

How would you describe the working culture in your office?

The office is very friendly and supportive making it a good environment to work in. There are sports and social events nearly every month that give you the opportunity to meet colleagues outside of the work environment.

What training and mentoring have you been offered/undertaken with Rolton Group and how have they supported you?

I receive informal day-to-day on the job training and guidance from my team and I also meet with an external professional development mentor every six months to discuss my career development and general topics to help with my progression.

What are you career aspirations?

I am looking to become a project engineer and gain Chartered engineer status in the near future.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to start their career in the engineering/built environment industry?

Get a good understanding of the industry you want to work in and develop your skills appropriately. Pick a course at university and modules that are relevant to your desired career.
