Taylor Mains - Business Administration

Why did you decide to become an apprentice?

After I finished my GCSEs, I didn’t really want to do A Levels. I did some work experience during the school holidays and really enjoyed learning while I was working. I decided to do an apprenticeship as it was the best of both worlds, as it lets me to get the qualifications I need but I am also able to get experience and learn on the job.

What was your interview and selection process like?

There were a number of stages in my interview process. I had a couple of pre-interview assessments with my college including an English and Maths test. Once I had passed these, I had an interview at college where I was asked about what experience I had and what I knew about business administration. Then I came to Rolton Group where I was interviewed by Peter Rolton and my line manager, Tracey Mehew. It felt more like a chat and Tracey explained what the role would be like on a day-to-day basis and the history of the company.

What does your usual working day consist of?

My role mainly consists of general administration tasks, which could be anything from booking in documents/drawings, issuing them to clients and also formatting them to match our in-house style. As I don’t have my own team, I assist other members of the admin team to make sure documents are issued on time and any other support required is provided.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

As this is my first office job and I haven’t been at Rolton Group for too long, the thing I find most challenging is that there is so much to learn! I do like how varied the role is because I get a lot more experience and it is allowing me to develop my skills. Everyone is really helpful and they have made it easy to settle in and to ask questions when I need help.

What is the best thing about being an apprentice?

I think the best thing about being an apprentice is the experience you get. I am able to learn on the job and by the time I have finished my apprenticeship I will have a lot more experience.

How would you describe the working culture in your office?

Really friendly, we are able to have a joke and chat, but know when we need to work to make sure deadlines are met. As I only recently joined the company, I am still getting to know how things are done, and everyone has been really helpful and taken the time to explain the processes to me.

How is Rolton Group helping you to achieve your career goals?

I have received lots of on-the-job training and I am doing a variety of tasks which is allowing me to have a lot of different experiences. Once I start going to college, I will also have day release for my studies.

What advice would you give to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship?

Research the job that you want to do and see what qualifications you need, as you may not have to go to university. I would also suggest weighing up the pros and cons of an apprenticeship.
