Rolton Group was appointed by City, University of London to provide mechanical and electrical building services design services on the basis of a performance design scope to enable the project to be competitively tendered.
Working at their main campus in Northampton Square, Rolton Group has worked with the client’s project management team on this multi-phase refurbishment contract to create new computer laboratories, music rooms, lecture rooms and a student centre/breakout space.
The project commenced with stripping out and demolition works on the ground and first floor areas of the College building, removing fixtures, fittings and partitions. The removal of asbestos was also undertaken.
The new service installations comprised of lighting, small power and electrical supplies to the mechanical plant. Upgrade works were carried out to the fire detection and security systems together with a new data and audio visual (AV) installation.
Mechanical services installations included new mechanical ventilation, multi-service chilled beams (MSBs) and control systems, as well as adaptation to the existing LTHW heating system.
Comfort cooling was provided to the area by connecting the MSBs to the new chilled water ring main, serving the campus.
Chilled water supplies were taken from a tri-generation energy centre.
The installation of bespoke partitions and specialist AV installations has created new and improved learning spaces for undergraduate and postgraduate students; these include acoustic ceilings to the ground floor, acoustic raised flooring to the first floor, fixed and sliding glass partitions, secondary glazing and balustrading to handrails.
The decoration and finishes throughout have provided a contemporary and attractive learning and working environment for students and staff alike.
