Henry Chichele Primary School

Rolton Group were appointed by Lendlease to provide multi-disciplinary engineering services for the extension and alteration of Henry Chichele Primary School, Higham Ferrers.

The works included a new two-storey classroom extension to the rear of the school, along with a new single-storey classroom extension to the front. Alterations were made to the existing buildings and main plant to facilitate the new extensions as required.

As a school local to one of our regional offices, the project provided a useful insight into the local community and their requirements.

The accommodation includes both teaching and support facilities including kitchen spaces, offices and meeting/group rooms. Rolton Group is provided assistance and support in running the project to BIM Level 2 in conjunction with the project Architect.

Rolton Group’s mechanical and electrical engineers undertook building dynamic thermal modelling and Part L analysis for the project, including daylighting assessment in accordance with the relevant Building Bulletins and other technical requirements.

Additionally, the existing school boilers, hot water calorifiers and associated distribution were identified as insufficiently sized to accommodate the increased school size following proposed extension. As part of the wider project the existing boiler room was stripped out and replaced with new equipment of sufficient capacity.

Utilising higher efficiency equipment, additional capacity was provided from the same sized plantroom with no increase in footprint and additional remote areas of extension were provided with air source heat pump heating to increase the energy efficiency of the building.

Rolton Group’s civil and structural engineers delivered the design of the steel frame mass foundation and floorslab. A check on the existing foul pumped drainage system was required to ensure that it could cope with the additional flow that the new extension facilities would bring.
