City University London, NSQ Infrastructure Replacement

Rolton Group was appointed by City University to provide mechanical and electrical building services design services on the basis of a performance design scope to enable the project to be competitively tendered.

This was carried out in a collaborative manner with the BDP London office with Rolton Group performing the mechanical design duties and BDP performing the electrical design duties.

The project comprised the replacement, alteration and adaption of the main services throughout the Northampton Square (NSQ) campus of City University London.

The mechanical elements undertaken by Rolton Group included the following:

  • New primary chilled water distribution
  • New chiller plant
  • New primary LTHW distribution
  • New supply and extract ventilation
  • New air handling units
  • New building management system (BMS) and control systems

New air handling units and chillers were provided on the roof of the Tait Building providing fresh air and chilled water respectively to meet the current and anticipated future services demands of the building and campus.

A comprehensive survey of the existing installed mechanical and electrical services within the service risers was carried out to determine available capacity for new services and where existing services could be relocated.

All works were carried out while maintaining an operational occupied building. Works were programmed to minimise disruption due to noise and other construction related considerations.
