Silverstone Circuit - Energy plan

Silverstone Circuit is the heart of the British motor racing industry and had plans to development to enhance its current facilities with additional educational, engineering, leisure and distribution facilities, together with office space.

However, the development of the existing site was constrained by the current energy provision.

The commission for Rolton Group involved establishing existing energy provision in terms of load and energy source; calculating the future energy requirements of the proposed development; developing technical solutions; creating a cost plan for capital and operating costs; commercial analysis, including consideration of UK Government policy and advising on the viability of the proposed options.

Rolton Group’s recommendations called for the development of a biomass power station burning waste wood on the Silverstone site. This would provide heat and power to the site, enable the commercial development of the site and allow excess power to be sold back into the grid.

The project consisted of the following elements:

  • 20MWe Biomass CHP plant as energy source
  • Primary energy centre
  • Modular energy centre back up provision
  • Enhanced grid connection
  • District heating network developed in a three-phased approach
  • Interface and connection to existing buildings
  • Provision for future connections
